What is the Great Commission?

Description: Dr. LaDonna Osborn teaches from her 50 years of experience in evangelism on how to define the Great Commission. Using the Gospels as a reference, Dr. Osborn will help us answer these questions about the Great Commission: What is it? Who gave it? Why was it given? Who does it concern? And why is it called great?

Meet the Evangelist: https://osborn.org/  Bishop LaDonna C. Osborn is President and CEO of Osborn Ministries International, the world missionary organization founded by her parents, T.L. & Daisy Osborn, in 1949. She is Founder and Overseer of the International Gospel Fellowship (of churches and ministries), which includes more than 60 ministries, over 1,000 churches in more than 50 nations globally. Dr. Osborn is also the Co-Founder and President of the Women’s International Network which encourages, educates and equips women for all areas of Christian ministry.

Key Scriptures: Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-18; Luke 24:46-49; John 20:21-22; Romans 10:13-15; Luke 9:1-2; Luke 10:1-2; Acts 1:8; Acts 2

Key Points:

We must define the Great Commission with the unbeliever in mind.

The Great Commission is about power; it’s an order; it’s a charge with a specific action.

Jesus gave us this mandate after His resurrection.

Every Spirit-filled follower of Jesus Christ is empowered to be His witness.

This authoritative order by the resurrected Jesus is Good News for the entire world.

Notes:

It is important that we learn to express Christian language in a way the unbeliever can understand.

The simple definition of commission is the act of trusting a person with power and authority; an authoritative order, charge or direction; authority granted for a particular action or function.

The phrase “Great Commission” is not in the Bible.

Jesus Christ is the One who gave this mandate; this charge, order, authority, and power.

Jesus gave this mandate after the resurrection; after the work of redemption was complete.

What we call the Great Commission was the final words Jesus gave to his followers.

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you’ve heard the Gospel, and you’ve chosen to believe, then miraculous signs will follow you.

As you engage in evangelism, you will confront the powers of darkness. Do not ever back down.

We must remember that we have been sent in power and authority to demonstrate what Jesus wants to do in the world.

Take the promises of the Word of God seriously as you represent Jesus to a hurting world.

Never leave out these three foundational truths when presenting the Gospel: the cross, the resurrection, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.

We are carriers of peace. Live with peace. Claim peace. Walk with peace.

Everything that has plagued humanity came as a result of sin. But, Christ came and provided full atonement for our transgressions.

We shouldn’t separate what we are calling the Great Commission from the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Every Spirit-filled follower of Jesus Christ has been equipped to share the Good News.

As carriers of the divine life of Jesus Christ, we bring solutions to people in pain.

The Great Commission is Jesus trusting you to tell people about Him; to be an extension of His love, His compassion, His forgiveness, and His healing.

The Great Commission is God’s plan from the beginning in that His human creation would be His reflection on the earth and establish His Kingdom.

The destiny of every person is to be conformed to the image of Christ.

We can witness effectively. We are the voice, but God is the source of power that transforms hearts.

Take the Great Commission of Jesus Christ as a commission to us and choose to act on it in confidence knowing we have the power, the authority, and the mandate to do so.
